Arts Section
Paintings and sculptures are the product and appeals primarily to the imagination. It would be very difficult to find a subject that no one has ever tried to paint. Artists paint the things they see around them -- people, animals, nature, and objects. They also paint dreamlike scenes that exist only in the imagination. An artist can reach back into the past and paint a historical event, a religious story, or a myth. Some artists paint pictures that show no recognizable subject matter at all. Instead, they arrange the paint in some way that expresses feelings or ideas that are important to them.

Drawings Section
Artists create drawings for a variety of purposes. Many artists make preliminary drawings to help them develop the composition of a painting or sculpture. They also produce drawings as finished works of art. Artists draw with chalk, charcoal, crayon, or pencil. They may use a liquid, such as ink, applied with a brush or pen. Artists also scratch drawings into a surface. For example, a silverpoint drawing is made by scratching into specially coated paper with a silver instrument or silver wire. Brushes, pencils, and pens are made in a variety of widths to create different kinds of lines. Artists can add tone to a drawing by applying a thin layer of liquid color called a wash. They also may combine several materials and techniques in one drawing. Almost any surface can be used for a drawing. Prehistoric people drew on clay and stone, and the ancient Chinese used silk cloth. In the Middle Ages, many artists drew on parchment. Since the 1400's, paper has been the most popular surface because it is inexpensive and easy to carry.

Poetry Section
Poem is defined as any composition in verse; arrangement of words in lines usually with a regularly repeated accent and often with rhyme. Poems are often highly imaginative or emotional, designed to express or convey deep feelings and thoughts. These are a composition showing great beauty or nobility of language or thought. Poetry is a type of literature in which the sound and meaning of language are combined to create ideas and feelings. Many people are first attracted to poetry by the sound and rhythm of a poem's words. Poetry began in prehistoric times. Early peoples used poetic language with accompanying music in songs, prayers, and magic spells. The patterns of rhyme and rhythm helped people remember and so preserve oral poetry from generation to generation. After the development of writing, poetry gradually became an important written art. Today, millions of people throughout the world continue to listen to or read poetry. Many people also write poetry.

Stories Section
Storytelling is one of the oldest forms of folk art. This is often a part of ordinary conversations. For example, when you describe the picnic you attended, you are telling a story. In formal storytelling, a person prepares a story to present to an audience. Several storytellers tell stories from their own imagination, while some storytellers learn stories that appears in books. Good sources of stories include folklore, primarily myths, epics, legends, and fables. In addition, literary tales and religious works also provide material for stories. The listeners/readers also learn about other countries and cultures, expand their creativity, develop listening skills, and are, of course, entertained.

Advertising is a message designed to promote a product, a service, or an idea. Printed advertisements make up a large part of newspapers and magazines. Poster ads appear in many buses, subways, and trains. Neon signs along downtown streets flash advertisements. Billboards dot the roadsides. Commercials interrupt TV and radio programs. The purpose of most advertising is to sell products or services. Advertising plays a key role in the competition among businesses for the consumer's dollar. Most historians believe that outdoor signs above shop doors were the first form of advertising. As early as 3000 B.C., the Babylonians, who lived in what is now Iraq, used such signs to advertise their stores. The ancient Greeks and Romans also hung signs outside their shops. Few people could read, and so merchants used symbols carved in stone, clay, or wood for the signs. For example, a bush indicated a wine shop, and a boot advertised a shoemaker's shop.
